A Brief Introduction
The university was founded in 1974 as Anhui Normal University at Huaibei. Approved by the State Council and established as Huaibei Coal Industry Teachers College in December, 1978, it was assigned to be administered by the former Ministry of Coal Industry and started to enroll students from all over China. After September of 1998, the university operated in a management system of “being jointly constructed by both the central and Anhui municipal governments, but mainly administered by the latter”. The university was authorized to confer master degrees in 2003 and received “Excellence” level in the quality level evaluation of undergraduate education conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2007. In 2009, HNU was enrolled as an institution with the approved program of constructing it into a unit with the right to confer doctoral degrees and was also approved to establish postdoctoral posts in Anhui Province. In the same year, it signed an agreement with Anhui University to jointly cultivate doctoral degree candidates. There are now more than 20,000 full-time undergraduate and post-graduate students at school, 18 schools and 56 undergraduate specialties in HNU. It has become a key university in Anhui Province with a large scale in school-running, a wide coverage of the disciplinary categories and distinctive features. Based on concentration on cultivating talents for Anhui with a consideration of serving the whole country, HNU will maintain its characteristics and strive to become a high-level teachers university with distinctive features, a balanced development of multiple disciplines and popularity in certain fields within China in the near future.
