Founded in 1958, North China Electric Power University (NCEPU) is one of the “Project 211” universities, and one of the key universities in China under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. Due to national power system reform in 2003, the administrative power of the university was transferred from State Electric Power Corporation to the Ministry of Education, and jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education and the Directorate, which was composed of seven super-large power enterprises including the State Grid Corporation of China. In 2013, the Directorate was reshuffled to involve nine organizations, including not only seven super-large power enterprises, but also China Electricity Council (CEC), and NCEPU.

The University possesses a high-quality teaching staff with a total number of 3,000 professional teachers. At present, more than 27,000 full-time students, including 20,000 undergraduates and 7,000 post-graduates, are studying there. The Universitycovers a total area of 106 hectares. NCEPU, under an integrated administration, consists of two campuses in Beijing and in Baoding respectively, with the Beijing Campus as its main campus. NCEPU (Baoding) is located in the Electricity Valley of China –Baoding city. Many excellent power generation and operation enterprises and high-tech developing companies have become the University’s bases for teaching and practice, as well as for scientific application. As a prestigious campus of NCEPU, it enjoys many advantages such as convenient transportation, elegant environment, and much lower living expenses than those of the neighboring cities like Beijing and Tianjin.

In order to meet the needs of national development strategy, NCEPU is dedicated to establishing a new disciplinary system of Integrative Electric Power Engineering, on the basis of superior disciplines, with emphasis on new energy research, and with support of the disciplines of liberal arts and sciences. Focusing on engineering, the University pays much attention to the combination of engineering and science, the mutual promotion between electrical discipline and other disciplines, and the harmonious development of science, engineering, liberal arts, economics, management and law, so as to reach an academic discipline system with distinctive characteristics. Currently, NCEPU maintains 10 schools, 58 bachelor’s programs, 2 key disciplines at the nationallevel, 23 key disciplines at the provincial and ministerial level, 5 mobile stations of post-doctoral scientific research, 5 first-level disciplines and 30 second-level disciplines authorized to confer Ph. D. degrees, 23 first-level disciplines and 123 second-level disciplines authorized to confer master’s degrees, as well as Master’s Program of Business Administration and professional degree programs.

At present, NCEPU possesses a high-quality teaching staff, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 jointly-employed academicians，6 scholars of the “Recruitment Program of Global Experts” (1000 Talent Plan), 1 scholar of the “Thousand Talents Program” for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 experts of National Special Support Program for High-level Talents (10,000 Talent Plan), 5 chair scientists of the national “973” program, 1 National-level Distinguished Teacher, and 4“Chang Jiang Scholars”.6 teachers have won the programs sponsored by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 8 teachers have been selected for the National “Project of Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents”. Moreover, 28 teachers have been selected for the Project of Supporting Outstanding Talents in the New Century by the Ministry of Education, and 4 scientific groups have been selected for the Development Program of “Chang Jiang Scholars” and Innovative Groups by the Ministry of Education.

Listed as one of the first universities in the Program of High-level Engineers by the Ministry of Education, NCEPU is exploring and improving the “Qualification plus Extension” educational system. It has 5 Excellent Courses at the nationallevel, 2 Outstanding Teacher Groups at the nationallevel, 11 Distinctive Programs at the nationallevel, 3 Centers for Experimental Teaching at the nationallevel, 10 Centers for Experimental Teaching at the provincial and ministerial level. Moreover, with excellent result, the University has passed Undergraduate Teaching Evaluation made by the Ministry of Education.

In order to serve the national significant development strategy, NCEPU is actively participating in the construction of national innovation system. 3 scientific and technological innovation platforms at the national level have been established. Besides, the University also maintains 3 key laboratories at the ministerial level, together with 11 key laboratories and research bases at the provincial level. In recent years, the University has achieved great success in the important fields of new energy power generation, ultra-high voltage, smart power grid, efficient and clean coal-fired generation technology, and nuclear power technology and so on. Since the “Tenth Five-year Plan,” the University has undertaken over 1,900 scientific projects at the national level from Major National Research and Development Projects, “973” Program, “863” Program, National Scientific and Technological Support Project, and National Natural Science Fund. And 162 of these projects have won the Awards for Scientific and Technological Progress at the national, provincial and ministerial levels. Since 2001, the University’s scientific research funds have been increasing rapidly. Among the universities under direct jurisdiction of Ministry of Education, NCEPU takes the lead in contributing science and technology papers searched by the three important international index systems. Engineering of NCEPU is ranked among the top 1% in Essential Science Indicators (ESI) global ranking.

Zealously promoting diverse international exchanges and cooperation such as EMBA, “1+1”, “2+2” baccalaureate degree joint-education programs and continuous joint-education programs from bachelor to master degrees, NCEPU has set up the Confucius Institutes in many foreign countries such as Egypt and USA, and established cooperative ties with more than 120 distinguished universities and scientific institutions in USA, Britain, France, Russia, Japan and other parts of the world. Four Talent Introduction Bases have been listed on the Talent Introduction Plan of Higher Education Disciplinary Innovation (Plan 111). The School of International Education of NCEPU (Baoding) provides first-rate service for international students, offers full support for their admission and study, and helps them to get their visas.
