Introduction

Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST), founded in 1960 and renamed from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology in 2004, was designated in 1978 as one of the key institutions of higher learning in China. The university is co-constructed by China Meteorological Administration and Jiangsu Provincial Government. With a scientific research center for post-doctoral students, NUIST enjoys a complete educational system, conferring Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees.

Currently, there are around 30,000 full-time undergraduate students and over 1,600 teachers in NUIST. 70% of the teachers are professors or associate professors or have a doctoral degree, and 54% of whom has the experiences of studying abroad. The university consists of 22 schools and departments: School of Atmospheric Science, School of Applied Meteorology, School of Remote Sensing, School of Atmospheric Physics, School of Hydrometeorology, School of Marine Science, School of Information and Control, School of Electronic and Information Engineering, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Computer and Software, School of Mathematics and Statistics, School of Physics and Optoelectronics, School of Public Administration, School of Economics and Management, School of Languages and Cultures, School of Media and Arts, School of Marxism, School of Vocational Technical Education, College of Continuing Education, Binjiang College, College of International Students, Department of Sports. The university has more than 20 scientific research institutes at provincial and ministerial levels.

NUIST owns a group of key disciplines at national, provincial and ministerial levels, national and provincial characteristic specialties and provincial and ministerial levels, national and provincial characteristic specialties and provincial brand specialties. The university offers a total of 55 specialties for bachelors, which covers the fields of science, engineering, management, literature, economics, laws, agriculture and arts, and almost all bachelors’ specialties have related master’ s or doctoral programs. NUIST has long been committed to key research programs and striving for a distinctive and high-level development in the scientific study.

Adhering to the school spirit of “hard-working, plain-living, truth-seeking and self-improving” and abiding by the school motto of “promotion of virtue, investigation of nature, cultivation of self and construction of society”, NUIST intends to cultivate students to be “elite, international & skilled” talents. About 50,000 students have so far graduated from the university and many of them have become backbones in different areas such as science and technology, education and administration at home and abroad.

NUIST gives priority to exchanges and cooperation on scientific research and intellectual fostering with over 50 famous universities and research institutes overseas. It is qualified to enroll international students with Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship, Jasmine Scholarship of Jiangsu Provincial Government, NUIST-WMO Scholarship, Nanjing Government Scholarship and MOFCOM Meteorology Program. The Regional Training Center of the World Meteorological Organization established on the campus has trained over 2600 junior and senior personnel engaged in meteorology and its administration for more than 147countries and regions around the world.

NUIST sticks to the guideline of “open and joint development”, makes concerted efforts to implement the strategy of strengthening the university by talents, adheres to reform, innovation and characteristic development, and enhances disciplinary construction, teaching staff construction, intellectual cultivation, scientific research and international cooperation to strengthen its innovation capacity in science and technology and improve the educational quality in intellectual cultivation. The university plays an active role in serving Chinese meteorological cause and economic and social developments of Jiangsu Province and strives forward to be a first-class key university with characteristics.
