V. Non-degree Education

A. Rudimentary, Intermediate and Advanced Chinese Language Class

Aim of Training:

Rudimentary Class (I, II): Students are expected to grasp basic knowledge of pinyin and tones, grasp 3,051 words and 1,604 Chinese characters. Students are expected to have basic listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities, which will enable them for basic living, study and social conversation. This level is equivalent to HSK Rudimentary B Level or above.

Intermediate Class (I, II): Students are expected to grasp 5,253 words and 2,205 Chinese characters, have above average listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities, which will enable them to pursue studies at Chinese institutes of higher learning. This level is equivalent to HSK Intermediate C Level or above.

Advanced Class (I, II): Students are expected to grasp more than 7,000 words and 2,550 Chinese characters. At the end of the course students will be able to comprehend Chinese broadcasting and TV programs as well as newspapers and be able to pursue higher studies. Students will be able to use their language in socializing and conduct general affairs in China-related tourism, trade and commerce. This level is equivalent to HSK Intermediate A Level or above.

Length of Study: One year for each level. Each level is divided into two semesters. Students may apply for either semester according to his/her own Chinese ability. Transfer students are accepted.

Main Courses:

For Rudimentary Class:

Basic Chinese, Basic Chinese Conversation, Basic Chinese Listening Basic Chinese Reading ,etc.

For Intermediate Class:

Intermediate Chinese Intensive Reading, Intermediate Chinese Extensive Reading, Intermediate Chinese Listening and Speaking, Basic Chinese Writing, An Outline of Modern Chinese Grammar, China Today.

For Advanced Class:

Advanced Chinese, Audio-visual Chinese, Advanced Chinese Reading, Advanced Spoken Chinese, Introduction to Literature, Applied Writing, An Introduction to Chinese Culture, Modern Chinese Lexicology, Modern Chinese Grammar, Modern Chinese Rhetoric, Business Chinese, Chinese Movies, etc.

Requirement for Completion of Studies: Students will be conferred the Completion of Studies Certificate by Jinan University upon successful completion at all required courses.

B. Crash Chinese Course (Fundamental Class, Higher Class)

Aims: Students in the Fundamental Class will acquire sufficient skills in Chinese listening, speaking and reading so as to allow them basic intercourse within a short period of time. Students in the Higher Class course will acquire better skills of Chinese listening, speaking, reading, as well as basic skills in Chinese writing. This level is equivalent to HSK Rudimentary A Level or above.

Length of Study: 1 semester for Fundamental Class

1 semester for Higher Class

Main Courses: Chinese Intensive Reading , Chinese Extensive Reading , Chinese Listening and Speaking, Chinese Writing and Chinese Characters, etc.

Requirement for Completion of Studies: Students will be conferred the Completion of Studies Certificate by Jinan University upon successful completion at all required courses.

C. Business Chinese

Aim: Students will receive a a basic understanding of Chinese business and trade, and be able to grasp common business Chinese language and related social cultures. Student will be able to write basic business documents and deal with common business affairs.

Length of Study: 1 semester

Main Courses: Business Chinese Intensive Reading ,Oral Chinese for Business, Business Chinese Writing , China Survey, etc.

Requirement for Completion of Studies: Students will be conferred the Completion of Studies Certificate by Jinan University upon successful completion at all required courses.

D. Cantonese

Aim: Students are taught to be able to communicate clearly in Cantonese.

Length of Study: 1 semester

Main Courses: Cantonese Pronunciation, Cantonese Intensive Reading , Spoken Cantonese and Cantonese Listening, etc.

Requirement for Completion of Studies: Students will be conferred the Completion of Studies Certificate by Jinan University upon successful completion at all required courses.

E. Chinese Teacher Training Course

Aim: To improve the Chinese teaching ability of students.

Length of study: 4-6 weeks

Main Courses: Chinese Teaching Methodology, Language Teaching Practice, Modern Chinese Phonetics, Teaching Materials and Syllabus Preparation, Topics on Chinese Culture, Chinese and Foreign Languages Comparison (Courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's requirement.)

F. Part-time Chinese Language Class

Aim of Training: Students will improve their Chinese proficiency for work purposes and gain a basic understanding of China as well as Chinese language and culture.

Length of Study: one semester at weekend or evenings.

Main Courses: Chinese Intensive Reading , Chinese Listening and Speaking. (Courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's condition or requirement.)

G. Summer/Winter Vacation Chinese Courses

Aim: Chinese Training programs at different levels are provided according to the actual language ability of students. The courses are designed to allow students to gain a basic understanding of China as well as Chinese language and culture.

Length of study: 4 to 6 weeks during winter or summer vacation.

Main Courses: Chinese Intensive Reading, Chinese Listening and Oral Chinese, etc. (Courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's requirement.)

H. HSK Training Course

Aim: Students are familiarized with the requirement and test skills for the rudimentary-intermediate HSK test. Students will also improve their Chinese language ability through intensive practice.

Length of study: 4 to 6 weeks. Available in April, June and November each year.

Main Courses: HSK test-related skills and training courses. (Courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's requirement.)

I. ��Chinese Language and Culture�� Summer and Winter Camp

Aim of training: Students will learn basic knowledge of Chinese language and culture, improve their Chinese dialogue ability and understand the latest developments in Chinese society.

 

Length of study: 2 to 3 weeks, held in summer and winter vacation.

 

Main Courses: Mandarin Communication, Calligraphy, Music, Fine Arts, Martial Arts, etc. (Courses are subject to adjustment according to trainee's requirement.)

 

J. Chinese Mandarin Training Course for Students from Hong Kong , Macao and Taiwan

Aim: Students will master the pronunciation, tone, spelling and basic vocabulary of Mandarin Chinese, and improve the abilities of reading aloud.

Length of study: 26 class hours either part time or on vacation. The course may be extended according to trainee's requirements.

Main Courses: Chinese Mandarin Training, Reading Out, Criterion of Simplified Chinese, Chinese Pinyin, Vocabulary and Grammar, Syntax for Daily life. (Courses are subject to adjustment and accommodation packages are available according to trainee's requirements.)

 

K. Pre-examination Training Class for Qualification Certificate of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Aim: Students will be instructed in the requirement and test skills. Students will be able to grasp the systemic knowledge of subjects of the examination, and to improve their teaching ability of Chinese as a foreign/second language through intensive practice.

Length of study: 78 class hours to be completed either part time or on vacation. The class may be extended according to trainee's requirements.

Main Courses: Courses are subject to adjustment and accommodation packages are available according to trainee's requirements.)

For Elementary level: Modern Chinese Phonetics, Modern Chinese Lexicology, General Knowledge, Modern Chinese Grammar, Chinese Characters, Chinese Mandarin Training, Basic Knowledge of Chinese Literature, Chinese Culture.

For Intermediate Level: Modern Chinese Phonetics and Chinese Mandarin Training, Modern Chinese Lexicology, Modern Chinese Grammar, the Pedagogy of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign/Second Language, Chinese Literature, Chinese Culture.

For Advanced Level: Modern Chinese, Classic Chinese, Phonetics, the Pedagogy of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign/Second Language, Chinese Literature, Chinese Culture, Chinese Mandarin Training.

 

V. Long-distance (Correspondence) Education Undergraduate Programs and Professional Training Programs

Length of study: Under the Credit System, the standard length of study for undergraduate programs is five years. Professional training programs are normally three years in length.

A. Overseas Chinese Education

Aim of training: This major trains overseas Chinese language teachers by helping them improve Chinese application and grasping the latest teaching theories and techniques.

Main courses: Chinese Phonetics, Chinese Lexicology, Chinese Grammar, Chinese Rhetoric, Chinese Composition, Practical Chinese Teaching Pedagogy, Chinese Language Educational Psychology, Introduction to Overseas Chinese Education, Chinese Reading, Chinese Communication, Pedagogic Principle, Children's Study Psychology.

 

B. Teaching Chinese as a Foreign/Second Language

Aim of training: This major fosters Chinese-applied talents that grasp professional Chinese knowledge and skills and computer operation in Chinese, while acquiring Chinese historical culture and Chinese situation today. In addition, it enables graduates to engage in Chinese-related occupations.

Main courses: Basic Chinese, Chinese Phonetics, Chinese Listening, Basic Conversation, Chinese Reading, Chinese Grammar, Chinese Communication, Audio-Visual Chinese, Business Chinese, Tourism Chinese, Introduction to Chinese Culture, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Classic Chinese, Information Processing in Chinese, etc.
